A good uke doesn’t simply attack, neither does a skilled tori simply defend. Each helps the other learn principle and master effective attack and counterattack.
— Sensei Jesse Boyd

the uke

  • Attack honestly and appropriately to tori’s level of advancement.

  • Only SPEED and/or POWER is adjusted, not the integrity of the attack.

  • Perform only at the speed at which you can safely break-fall.

  • As tori improves, so should the cooperative level of uke’s resistance.

  • As FALLING (i.e. UKEM), improves, so will technique and balance.

  • Use the role of uke to practice proper striking principles

the tori

  • Apply principle

  • Practice and learn proper form of technique

  • Take care of UKE.
